It’s been a long time coming, but indie-folk act Shanne Dandan is finally ready to unveil her highly anticipated debut album, “Kung Iyong Mamarapatin,” set to be released on October 25 via Viva Records.

More than just a personal musical milestone, Shanne’s first-ever album also represents her story of emotional growth and a testament to her newfound creative freedom. Navigating the pressures of the industry while discovering her own voice, she has crafted an album that fuses heartache, resilience, and empowerment.

“Before, I used to follow kung ano lang yung tinuturo sa akin,” she said during a recent interview withSoundStripand other media. “Now, I’m free.”

Through her unique blend of indie-folk and R&B influences, the 10-track album serves as a poignant farewell to broken dreams while also offering a hopeful reminder that new ones can still be created.

“Kung Iyong Mamarapatin” is bound to take listeners on an emotional rollercoaster, one that will leave them teary-eyed one moment and dancing the next.

Exploring emotional depths

Once a standout on The Voice as a 12-year-old, Shanne has grown leaps and bounds since then, both musically and emotionally.

Each track in her debut album is rooted in a specific emotional journey, inviting listeners to embrace their own feelings and find strength in them. But rather than confining herself to one genre, the indie-folk singer allows her emotions to guide her songwriting process.

“When I write, I don’t play any instrument para ma-convey yung feeling ko,” she said.

The album opens with Gemini, a track that captures the weight of uncertainty. “It’s like feeling na walang mapuntahan,” she said, adding that the song evolves into a comforting embrace towards the end, “It’s like a hug.” This song is revisited later in a collaborative reprise featuring Lui Tan and Yuna Reguerra.

Following this, “Kailan Ba Ako Magiging Masaya” tackles the complex emotions of longing for fulfillment, resonating with anyone who has felt incomplete. Such a melancholy tone contrasts with the upbeat yet poignant “Iyakin,” which is described as channeling “sad twerking” vibes. It emphasizes using one’s tears as fuel for strength, encapsulated in the lyric, “Gagamitin ang pagluha sa pagguhit ng paraiso.”

As the album progresses, lighter, romantic tones are introduced like “What Do I Do with You,” offering a refreshing break from the album’s heavier emotional themes. Featuring gentle guitar riffs and a breezy sound, this reflects her feelings of beginning to fall in love again.

Another standout track is “‘Di Na Babalik Sa’yo,” which was released as a single earlier in 2024. Written in 2022, the song is a powerful declaration of self-worth and independence, with Shanne asserting that she will no longer return to toxic relationships or situations.

In her Instagram Broadcast Channel “Sunshannes,” she clarified on September 14 that “‘Di Na Babalik Sa’yo” is personal, countering external interpretations.

In a nod to her musical influences, the singer-songwriter included a cover of Timmy Cruz’s “Boy I Love You, a song she chose due to her love for classic Filipino music. With layered vocals and intricate harmonies, she asserted, “Ang hirap ng layers ng vocals pero worth it naman.”

The title track, “Kung Iyong Mamarapatin,” encapsulates the album’s core theme of self-empowerment. It begins with a sense of longing, as she expressed her wish for something out of reach, “Yung ihip ng hangin, winiwish mong mag reach sayo.”

However, as the song unfolds, it shifts towards a more empowering narrative: “Wait—I hold my own pen and paper, so it’s possible,” she said.

Concluding the album are acapella versions of “Kailan Ba Ako Magiging Masaya” and “Boy I Love You,” stripping down the songs to their emotional core and showcasing Shanne’s vocal prowess.

Creative inspiration

Shanne Dandan’s foundation in OPM classics and folk music shaped her keen sense of melody and storytelling, giving her an instinct for the emotional depth that defines Filipino music. “My family is musically inclined,” she shared, recalling how she was surrounded by different genres growing up.

Breaking free from the mainstream mold after her stint in a national singing competition, Shanne created music that reflects raw emotion rather than conforming to expectations. Influences like Armi Millare and Aurora helped her evolve, and it was Lea Salonga who cemented the idea of singing from the heart. “Nadala ko rin yun in my own songs,” she added.

Fans will witness this ‘catharsis’ during her album launch at Sari-Sari Cocktails in Makati, with early bird tickets available for P500,

Expect no ordinary show from Shanne, as she said, “I will sing fully without the backing track and backing vocals, parang magiging choir talaga siya. Sobrang excited na po ako.”
